Client: Recovery School District
Cost: $20.5 million
Size: 95,000 SF
Completion Date: 2013
The renovation and addition of William Frantz School is an opportunity to celebrate the historic building while providing a 21st century learning environment.
The existing building dates back to 1937, and it also has a place in history due to its stature during the 1960s when Ruby Bridges, at the age of six, pioneered integration of the public school system in New Orleans at Frantz Elementary. Billes Partners developed plans for the Recovery School District that will renovate the existing building, respecting its history, and add a new addition. The existing and new portions of the project are contrasted, and separated with a nearly clear transition piece that distinguishes the two building components. The $22 million project also includes environmental remediation. Once complete, the project is expected to receive LEED Silver certification.
